Mooseheads Bar has a reputation for being a hangout for the ADFA crew, and many of the other armed forces based in Canberra. The feeling of the venue is pretty relaxed. Like many Canberra venues, it is two levels. Downstairs is a large, slightly Canadian styled bar, and upstairs is more of a typical pub dancefloor area. This gives the club a bit of variety, but really sets it up as a fairly ocka sort of venue. Jeans are definitely the dress code here, and the crowd age range is very broad; 18-32.
The downstairs bar is reasonably large. My memory of it is a little vague, but I recall that it felt like a Canadian log cabin bar, with a fair bit of wood panelling. A large bar on the left provides the merriment, and the rest of the walls carry all sorts of memorabilia, alcohol advertisements, and things like, wait for it, a moose head.
I am pretty sure there is a pool table, and they may even have the odd band or TV showing sporting events. However, it really is the sort of place where you will find typical pub music in the background, and can expect to spend most of your time standing near the bar, meeting people.
Upstairs is similar to downstairs, except that it is darker, and dominated by a dancefloor. I understand the music is a combination of party favourites, commercial dance, and retro. At the top of the stairs is a display of memoribilia, main photos. To the right is the area between the bar and the dancefloor. Back towards the front of the venue is another section of the dancefloor, slightly raised. I haven't really seen this room operating, so I cannot give you too much more detail.
From all impressions, Mooseheads is a pretty laid back type of a place, where you would down a few beers with a few friends, whilst singing along really badly to some cliched pub music. Looks like a great place to chill out. How can you go wrong with a place named in reference to a moose.
