Irish pubs are a big part of Canberra's nightlife. It makes sense, as Irish pubs are perfect for a very large part of Canberra's population, the office crowd, mid 20s-40. On weekends, that crowd sticks around, but as the nights get older, a younger crowd washes in. The suits go strong until about 11pm or so, and the trendy young pub set take over.
King's is very large for an Irish pub, and large for a Canberra venue. It is setup in a square doughnut configuration. You enter on the right side of the doughnut, through a strong foyer. Straight ahead are a few tables. Beyond that is the stage and a semi-dancefloor area. Further beyond that, on the back wall is the large bar, which is the focal point of the place.
To complete the loop of the venue, the left side of the venue (from the front) is heaps of tables and seating. Everything is in full Irish theme. If that isn't your style, out front is a large beer garden, great in the summer.
I have never really stay at King's all that long. It wasn't packed the night of this review, but it is often pretty busy, and I have seen a few queues there. Usually, the area around the left is quieter than the beer garden and band area which are very popular.
The music is typically Irish pub, although there did some to be a bit more modern music from time to time. However, it relies on typical Irish pub music, from the ballads and Irish favourites.
As is usually the case in Irish pubs, there is no cover charge. Drinks aren't too expensive by comparison to clubs, but you are best to buy by the pint. If you are looking for a trendy pub, with a pretty relaxed feeling, King's is a pretty good spot. Especially that beer garden.
