Whenever you visit any city, you have to check out the nightlife built into the Casino. Canberra Casino was one of Australia's first, but now feels tiny in comparison to places like Crown in Melbourne (which is more like a shopping centre). However, Canberra Casino does have a fair club built into it.
The crowd here is very predominately a good over 25s crowd, but not exclusively over 25s. Well dressed, and out for a good time. It was pretty busy the night of this review, but not too busy, just very comfortable.
It is mainly one room, although there is a nice looking pool room attached. You enter up some stairs into the back corner of the club. Immediately to your left is a small bar, to the right are couches and tables to sit around and talk. The back half of the room is mostly set out this way.
The back half is the non-smoking half. There is a row of plants across the middle of the room that defines the non-smoking area. It is remarkable effective. There is no sign of smoke in the back half at all, only clean air which is very refreshing. The downside, though, the front half is dominated by the smokers. In the front half, you also find another bar on the right, with the pool room beside it. Most of the rest of the front half is the dancefloor.
This was pretty busy, and very entertaining. There were a collection of people on the dancefloor dancing madly, intentionally entertaining the crowd. The DJ was helping out, playing a very broad mix of the best of everything. Top 40, commercial dance, retro, party, R&B clasics, and anything else. It is all good, and very dancy. The mix is spot on for the crowd.
Actually, the whole venue is spot on for the crowd. It is not huge, although it is very large by Canberra standarda, and a perfect size for the crowd. Add the perfect music, good dress, and the right atmosphere, and you have a really ideal venue for a more mature crowd.
