Fenix rises from the ashes

After a few months of poor crowds (it was packed when I worked there), Rosie's nightclub is no longer. However, the south-eastern suburbs will not be losing a venue for long. The venue will be developed as Fenix. From the launch promotions, it appears that they are trying to move the club up in class, which the area desperately wants. There is nothing exclusive in the suburbs. Fenix opens Friday June 2nd, with complimentary Crown Lager or Champagne on entry. - Ben, May 26th, 2000

Bullwinkles forced to rename

The Hallam Hotel has been forced to rename its popular Bullwinkles Nightclubs and Beer Garden. It appears the some moose drawing cartoonists were not thrilled by their name being borrowed, despite initial permission to use it. The room will be renamed soon, probably with a bit of a JDs theme. - Ben, May 11th, 2000

Viper Room returns

Having not really taken off, Club V has reverted to its older and more successful name: The Viper Room. Somehow, I suspect their lack of success has more to do with the music than the name. Everyone is now trying to play the same house/techno/tek-house mix. Soon they will work out that early '90s is the retro of the new millenium. - Ben, April 10th, 2000

Hard 'N Fast returns

After a fair absence, Chasers' legendary alternative night, Hard 'N Fast made a return last Wednesday. It was the original alternative night, and its rebirth will include a mix of alternative, punk, ska, techno, chemical, and electronica. There must be something in the air just now, with The Hallam also reverting to its tried and true Thursday formula, and Club V returning to Viper Room. - Ben, April 10th, 2000

Tooheys goes shopping

In an attempt to convert Melbourne's drinking population onto something a little more like Sydney's, Tooheys have bought out a stack of Melbourne's pubs and clubs, to the value of about $100m. As rumoured here months ago, the charge was led with the purchase of Metro. Strangely they neglected to buy out the old Stylus, which was the number one alcohol selling venue in Melbourne, despite only running one successul night a week. - Ben, April 7th, 2000

Voodoos back at Hallam

The Voodoo Surf Gods are making a long awaited return to the night that was their pinacle. As of next week, they once again headline Hallam's Thursday night, Club Juggernaught. For many years, this was easily the biggest Thursday night in Melbourne, and everyone in the outer South-Eastern suburbs hopes it will be again. - Ben, April 6th, 2000

Discoteque @ Metro, Fridays

This Friday sees the launch of Metro's new Friday dance party, Disco Teche. The radio ads sound very European in narute, and DJs such as Sergeant Slick and Mickey B score a mention. It is shaping to be a very housey, Euro, techno kind of night, and they are certainly trying hard to add some real attitude to it. There are further details on the Club Goss page. - Ben, March 1st, 2000

Two new clubs @ Colonial Stadium

Michael Gudinski, the man behind Mushroom and the Mercury Lounge, has teamed up with footy player manager Ricky Nixon, to establish two 900 people capacity nightclubs in Colonial Stadium. The lower level club will be called the Locker Room, and feature bands in laid back surrounds. Upstairs will be the upmarket club, Sirens. It will feature DJs, a dress code, dancefloors, and cocktail bars, similar to Merc. Both are likely to be popular hang-outs for local celebrities (probably footballers). They should open about March 9. - Ben, February 29th, 2000

Club Nigel opens Friday

There are one or two individuals in the nightclub industry who need to have a good hard look at themselves. The people behind "Club Nigel" don't have that problem. As of this Friday, the Frankston Grand (Gallery) starts a new lease on life as Club Nigel. Essentially it is the manager's name, although the guy behind the concept (Mick, not Nigel) sees the sort of humour in the name that has made other nights legendary.

The night is being pumped up for all it is worth, and should be a lot of fun. Two levels, DJs, and the Pop Tarts make for the entertainment. All Nigels will receive free entry on presentation of valid ID. - Ben, February 22nd, 2000

MAX runs for local council

MAX MOOSE proprietor Ben Clissold, is running for a spot on Casey council. He is running in Springfield Ward (Narre Warren South, Cranbourne North, Berwick South and Narre Warren), because it needs so much infrastructure like roads, schools, and facilities. The roads are the big issue, because people are risking their lives turning onto overcrowded main roads. Ben wants to fix the problem immediately, before someone is killed.

If you know anyone down there, tell them to vote for Ben! You will appreciate that this means that MAX may be a little slow updating for the next fortnight or so. - Ben, February 21st, 2000

Denim lounge goes techno on Sunday

NOTE: This night has since closed down.
The Denim Lounge is currently running a Sunday night, but it will not be providing a band. Instead it will provide the outer suburbs a place where some great dance and techno tracks, from DJs such as GDJ and Duncan (Monday @ Heat) and PC (appearances at Tatou), can be heard.
The Sunday night licence only runs until 1am, but the doors open at 8pm, so it still leaves five hours to get into it. With little open on Sundays, especially out this way, we are hoping to offer a venue closer to home for Sunday travellers.
With Thursday nights now strong and steady, Friday crowds ariving early to avoid the queue, and Saturday nights at capacitity, we hope Sundays will continue to build. - Christopher Mutton, February 2nd, 2000

Cops blast drug clubs

The Victorian police, today accused some club managers of being aware of drug dealings on their premises. As normal, the media blew this right out of proportion. Whilst some clubs do suffer from drug problems, the vast majority do not. I hope the guilty managers are exposed, caught, and punished, but I wish the clean clubs did not have to suffer from the negative publicity. I have been to most of the venues in Melbourne, and never been offered any substances whatsoever, in my many years of clubbing. - Ben, February 2nd, 2000
