A Valentines Soundevent Party

The team at Soundevents is at it again. After putting on a fantastic New Years Eve Party, they're kicking off 2000 with what looks like a night of fun and romance on Feb 12th. Starting at Jeff's shed you will cruise down the Yarra River, through docklands then up the Maribyrnong River to the riverside venue. Whilst taking in the great views of the city from the terrace, you will enjoy a buffet dinner including seafood. After dinner, comedian Dave Grant "the ultimate relationship counsellor", performs. If you’ve never seen Dave at the Espy or Armadale he will be guaranteed to have you laughing at dating in the new millennium.
The rest of the night will be rocking on with top Cover band Sacred Cows, playing some classic rock and a DJ bringing you some of the newest tunes. At the end of the night you will be bussed back to the casino, with who knows, maybe a new valentine on your arm? So, if you are looking for that special date for Valentines day or just want to get a group of friends together for a fun night. This will be one party you won't want to miss. For more info Call Soundevents on 93327491 or 0413 007 666. There is even a web site for the event. - Matthew Cull, January 31st, 2000

Peter Allen back @ SubCulture

Great news for the alternative fans out there. Peter Allen is back in the DJing fold at Subculture. He is quite confident that alternative is about to undergo a bit of a resergence, with many big bands releasing new albums shortly. However, alternative's recent decline has claimed the scalp of Plektrum, the Wednesday night @ Icon. - Ben, January 15th, 2000

Metro new owners?

Old news for some, but Metro now has new owners. Apparently, an international management group (rumoured to be Tooheys) made the owners of Metro an offer they could not refuse. They now have a share in a number of Melbourne's clubs. The Metro buy-out is a surprise given the impact of QBH. - Anon, December 9th, 1999 [Update]

Glow opens Saturday

This Saturday sees the launch of yet another club. Glow makes big promises (The event is unmissible, the venue is unforgettable, the party will be unbelievable), and its ads are striking, but will it deliver? The DJ line-up Donnie 1, DJ Lar, and Craig Delmo, suggests it will be yet another house and techno venue. It can be found at 422 Queen St, Melbourne. - Ben, December 1st, 1999

Lemon Tree soured

Carlton's Lemon Tree Hotel, haunt of many a Melbourne Uni student, has had its license cancelled for three months, and its capacity reduced thereafter. Local residents complained of excessive noise and rowdy behaviour, in the wake of several license extensions. The venue was open until 3am, with a capacity of 600. The finding prevents ‘amplified music’ after 10pm, and limits them to only 300 patrons. - Ben, December 1st, 1999

Bezza Nightclub

The Berwick Inn (AKA Bezza/Booza) is to open its new nightclub room in about a fortnight's time. It will hold something in the range of 500 people (just bigger than Rosie’s. The DJ will be Scotty B (ex Rosie’s), who is absolutely packing them in every Friday. Hopefully the Bezza will enforce some sort of dress code, and remain a pretty respectable venue. - Ben, November 27th, 1999

Top Shot up in flames

The Top Shot Wild West Saloon in Kilsyth burnt down last night. A blaze caused about $3m damage, with next to nothing left of the venue. The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage, but it did not appear suspicious. The venue was doing okay, so its loss is a dissapointment for the locals and the bands that played there. - Ben, November 3rd, 1999 [To be rebuilt]

Parliament at Metro

Okay, so its old news that I had not yet put on the site. Earlier this month, Metro launched a new night called Parliament. It replaces the once great Joy. Joy used to be one of the best Friday nights in town, with huge crowds, and loud, thumping house tunes. It more or less led the way in the start of the house music trend in Melbourne. Declining crowds (everyone moved over to Heat) about six months ago forced Joy's closure.

Parliament supercedes Joy. With a slightly harder edge to the music, and a fresher attitude, it should do okay.

It is in much better hands than the other Parliament... - Ben, October 15th, 1999

Three mega clubs on way

The rumours surrounding new clubs are running rife. They are largely unconfirmed, but Seven is a definite. The details on Seven follow. The other two clubs have been spoken about for a while, but good sources say they are coming closer to reality.

The other two are Mindshop/Mindworks? and the Queensbridge, opposite the Casino. Mindshop or Mindworks is going to be based somewhere down near the Polly Woodside. It is going to be modelled on the UK’s Ministry of sound, and be the place to be for touring international DJs. It will be very underground.

The Queensbridge (QBH), opposite the Casino has been spoken about for months. It will be gigantic, with a rumoured capacity of 2,500. It is supposedly going to rival Metropolis in Perth for Australia’s largest club. It previews Tuesday, August 31st, and opens about a month afterwards. - Ben, August 21st, 1999

Seven is coming, Toga going

Here is the news many people have been waiting for. The rumours are not confirmed, but come from very, very good sources. A new superclub, Seven will open about September 24th. It is the same people who created and ran The Redhead and Saratoga. It will be about 800-1000 in capacity, and be located near Saratoga. To make the new club happen, Saratoga is closing down, and August sees its last weekend.

The nightclub world is buzzing with excitement over Seven, because the industry needs something new and innovative. Tom Walker, Raff, and co. know what they are doing, and this club will be the place to be. It will be one for the nightclub elite. There are apparently a few memberships floating around, so keep your eyes and ears open.- Ben, August 21st, 1999

Wild Bills

I visited Southland today and took a look at "The Street", the area devoted to us. There are skate, surf, and music shops, as well as Village Cinemas and the Wild Bills Saloon. It looks pretty impressive. It is a good size, with full Western Decor, in a '90s sort of way. A huge bar, lots of seating, viewing decks, video games, pool tables, a dancefloor, and a stage for bands, gives it plenty of options. It is similar to Lone Star in some respects, and I gather they serve meals there as well. A good night could be had with a meal, a movie, and a club. If anyone has visited please tell us how it was - Glenn Gillen did. - Ben, June 30th, 1999

Players becomes Venom

Players is no longer, Venom comes to town. I am not sure if there are new owners, but Players (ex Nu Hotel) is presenting a new image with the new name. Holidays are with us

Voodoos & Denim Lounge okay

I’ve been to the Denim Lounge twice since it has opened and have had a great time. Greg the DJ is very friendly, in fact all the staff are very welcoming and easy going. The Voodoo Surfgods play on a Friday night and I am happy to say that even though there were plenty of people on the first Friday night the second brought in the crowds. The guys played well and stayed around to have a couple of drinks and mingle with the punters. All went great!

I have to admit the Pelly Bar in Frankston is no great loss to the guys in comparison to this gig. Instead of attracting a bunch of 18 year old males, the Denim Lounge and the Voodoo Surfgods bring in a wide age bracket with all having a great time and a lot of laughs. Definitely worth a gander! - Sara Stanton, May 27th, 1999

DJ Scotty Baily and Rosie’s have parted company after almost three years. Both parties really needed a change, and both should benefit. Hallam Thursday’s back

It was always going to be packed on Good Friday Eve, but Hallam’s new Thursday with Crazy Haus has continued strongly. Good Friday Eve, the queue was out to the hot dog van before 9, and it only got longer. The night was like the old days at the Hallam. Mostly a local uni crowd, the way it should be on Thursday. House music @ Pop

I can confirm the story below. The fantastic R&B mix provided by Peril, Cue and co, is no longer in the Gods Bar @ Metro on Saturday. It has been replaced by House music supplied by Tim Byrne, Luke Bowditch, Cue, and guests on rotation. Hooray, another house music set! This is because Peril and crew are now part of ETD @ Chasers. It is probably also a reaction to the trend in music, which is currently house and techno. The only problem is that every club is providing it now. - Ben, March 29, 1999

Pop turns 4

Metro was jammed on Saturday night. It was Pop’s 4th Birthday, and was attended by a cast of thousands. I am sure the free drinks (b4 11) had something to do with that. However, the gods bar upstairs was quiet, with a house music mix replacing what was a fantastic R&B mix. - Ben
